How Do I Become a Certified Computer Technician?

You may be following the trends in the Information Technology industry and the explosion in Internet usage. Advances in technology and consequent reduction in component prices have brought down the cost of computers, resulting in a tremendous increase in the proliferation of personal computers. It is not uncommon to find a home with more than one computer connected in a Local Area Network (LAN).

The number of computer buyers is increasing, but very few computer owners are tech-savvy, and once they run into problems with the functioning of their computer, they need a trained professional who can troubleshoot their PC.

You may have decided to follow a career as a computer technician by recognizing this need in the market. You may have either trained yourself or studied to become a computer technician. However, this is not enough. What you need to recognize is that the industry wants certified professionals to meet their requirements.

Certification ensures a certain level of expertise and a company can be secure in the knowledge that their problems are being taken care of by trained professionals. For you, professionally, certification means that you can command a higher salary in the market compared to an uncertified professional and have many more options available.

How can one obtain certification? There are online certification exams you could opt for - Brainbench is one such certifying agency. Many of these certifications can be viewed by an employer online but a hard copy of the certification would probably have to be paid for. Alternatively, you could go to professional bodies like CompTIA that award certifications to professionals. These are much valued in the industry and could give you the winning edge over your competitors in winning a contract or a project.

Before you go in for a certification exams, make sure your basic knowledge is in place - it might be better to revise your knowledge of:

- Computer hardware components

- BIOS, Power supplies, ports and expansion slots

- IDE, SCSI and Bus architectures

- Processor - Interrupts, memory

- Basics of PC Repair

- Display cards and other peripherals like printers

- Computer vendor-specific design features

Once you have these fundamentals in place, you are ready to take that certification exam!

Mobile Computing - The Car Computer (Carputer)

Want to access the internet internet on the go? Use bluetooth to tether your phone and get internet where ever you have signal. Lost? Use a bluetooth GPS module and GPS software to navigate your way out. Just want to play music and videos? No problem, install a front end like Centrafuse and have at it.

Hardware

The setup I have right now consists of an AMD Geode 1.4GHz processor with 256MB DDR RAM and a 30GB 2.5? hard drive. The screen is a 7? Liliput motorized touch screen and the power supply is a 120W Opus. The whole setup can also be mounted in my glove compartment. The motherboard is a mini-ITX form factor board and the dimensions are 7? x 7?. The power supply sits right next to the motherboard and hard drive power is supported by small angle into the slot. Then there is a USB 2.0 hub to connect your Bluetooth-powered, wireless keyboard, etc.

Operating System

The operating system is TinyXP Rev. 06thTinyXP is basically an inferred from Windows XP. The entire installation takes up only 400MB and uses only 40MB of RAM. Even with only 256 MB of memory, the computer still boots incredibly fast. From the post on the Windows desktop, it takes less than 15 seconds! Watch the video below for a demonstration.

Peripheral / Addons

To receive the internet, usually strap my phone to Carputer via Bluetooth. I am using a Treo 755p with PdaNet installed, connect to the Carputer.Throughput is pretty good while tethering using the Sprint EVDO network, but it's nothing close to spectacular. Web pages will take an extra 2-3 seconds to load, but nothing major.

For navigation, I use a bluetooth TomTom MKII receiver with the SirfStar III chipset. The software side includes iGuidance v4 which uses Navteq maps. The GPS navigation system is pretty accurate and comes with a ton of POI.

Wireless 802.11 communication is handled by a Zonet ZEW-2500P USB 2.0 card. It has a Ralink chipset which can inject packets and is therefore compatible with many of the wireless penetration tools available today. Eventually, I will replace that wireless card with a Fonera that will stay on 24/7 running in client-mode with AutoAP. That way, the Fonera will automatically find open wireless networks (there never fails to be a shortage of em), connect to them, and allow me to remote control the Fonera from the internet. I could then use wake on LAN (WOL) to turn on the carputer. Furthermore, I plan to use a USB switch module to control different functions of the car such as remote start, alarm arm/disarm, lock/unlock, etc. That means that the car can literally be controlled from the internet!

Want to listen to music or watch movies? No problemo. Front ends like Centrafuse present the user with a nice interface with big buttons that compliment the touchscreen and fat fingers :). Within the interface, you can play music, watch movies, check the weather, launch a web browser, and more.

Input is handled by a MadCatz wireless keyboard which is generally used with PS3s. However, there is nothing special about the setup and it works fine when used with a computer. I like it because I don't have to carry a bulky keyboard around and it can be hidden very easily.

Understanding the Parts of the Motherboard Can Make You Wiser to Build Your Computer

When you are planning to build your computer you need to understand the parts of the motherboard. This is essential for you to know the importance of each part and what makes your system slower or faster. And the good thing here is that you'll learn how to choose your own computer parts wisely.

The following explains the major parts of motherboard

1. CPU socket - is a part of motherboard that holds the processor in proper place. Sometimes called ZIF socket (zero insertion force) because it allows the processor to be inserted without any resistance or effortless and to be locked in proper place with the lever arm.

2. Chipset - It comes with two parts the Northbridge and the Southbridge chipset. The Northbridge handles the communications between the processor, RAM, ROM BIOS, PCI-E and AGP it also connects the Southbridge. The Southbridge manages the slower capabilities of motherboard such as the SATA, IDE, USB, Audio and LAN. In short, the Northbridge is a memory controller for fast capabilities and the Southbridge is an I/O controller for slower capabilities. In AMD64 processor the Northbridge was integrated to the processor.

3. Memory slot - It holds the memory module of your computer. Sometimes it is called memory banks. It has 2 types, the single channel and the dual channel. With the single channel you can install any number of memories while in dual channel you can only install the memories in pair with identical size and speed.

4. Interface connectors - It connects the drives from the motherboard. IDE or ATA (advance technology attachment) It connects the hard drives and optical drives in which you can attach 2 drives on the same cable one for the master and the other is the slave. Newer motherboard uses SATA (serial advance technology attachment) it is much faster than the ATA but it can only support one drive. And the older floppy drives connector which is almost obsolete nowadays. It can only support the floppy drive.

5. Expansion slots - There are 3 types of expansion slots that are most popular in use today. First is the AGP (accelerated graphics ports) slot, this is being used in video card. It comes with 2x, 4x and 8x speed in which the 8x is the fastest. Second is the PCI (peripheral component interconnect) slot, which is the commonly used on almost all cards like, LAN, sound, modem and other I/O controllers. And the latest PCI-Express (or simply PCI-E) slot, PCI-E 16x is mainly used for graphics card which is now the most widely used because it is much faster than the AGP. The PCI-E 1x is being used for common add-in cards such as LAN card, sound card and other peripheral add-in cards.

6. Back panel connectors - This part are connectors at the back of the casing of your CPU. They are used to connect your mouse, keyboard, printer, monitor, audio, mic and other peripherals you may want to connect.

Computer Network Routers, Hubs, and Switches

When computer networks are working well, which we hope is most of the time, the inner workings of the system modules are transparent to the average user. The most common components on a computer network, not counting cables, are "routers", "hubs", and "switches". Many of these modules can be similar cosmetically. Each assembly typically has Ethernet connectors (RJ45, which looks like an oversized telephone plug) and LED indicators. However, these modules function differently, and it is important to understand the differences.

Modern network hardware operates on the "Open System Interconnection" (OSI) standard. This standard defines how communications on a network should be implemented. By conforming to this standard, modules from different manufacturers can coexist on the same network. Wireless networks (WiFi) and the 802.11X standard are an additional subset of network systems.

When a message is sent between computers, it is broken into parts. At the base level, the message is reduced to "1" and "0" bits. The next level is a group of bits called a "frame". A frame contains its control information, including target address and error detection. The next level is a group of frames called a "packet". The terms frame and packet are sometimes used interchangeably. If a message is sent on a complex network like the Internet, some of the packets may take a otherwise, and met at the destination.

Tracking error with two frames and packages used. The most common procedure is called "cyclic redundancy check (CRC). Sums CRC of all" 1 "in the frame or packet. This number in hex at the end of frame / packet is stored. On the receiving side, the process is repeated . If I have the two hexadecimal values, is the proof. Otherwise, the receiver requests that the sending deviceresend. Most of this functionality is performed by integrated circuits (chips) inside the network modules.

The Hub

The network hub operates on the first layer of the OSI standard, called the "physical layer". The hub is the most simple of the three modules. A hub is not aware of the contents of the message that is processed; it handles the message as bits. It simply records the signal, and rebroadcast it to all, including back to the port that sent the message. An "active" hub will clean the electrical signal of noise and amplify the signal before rebroadcast. A "passive" hub does not amplify the received signal; it merely receives a signal, and rebroadcast the signal as received to each port. Hubs are sometimes used to link multiple computers with a printer.

The Network Switch

The network switch operates on the second layer of the OSI standard, called the "data link layer". The network switch, as indicated by its name, switches signal paths, so that a message frame goes to a specific destination. A switch will improve a networks performance, especially on networks with many computers. A switch has enough on-board intelligence to remember the path to each destination. The network switch handles a message in frames.

When you connect a computer to a network switch, the switch will record the Media Access Control or "MAC" address of the computer's network interface card (NIC). This is called address protocol, or "ARP". When a frame is received intended for a specific computer, the switch sends the frame only to that computer. By preventing paths of the network from being utilized by every frame, network resources are conserved. Computer A can send a frame to computer B, while simultaneously, computer C is sending a frame to computer D.

The Network Router

The network router operates on the third layer of the OSI standard, called the "network layer". A router's name is also indicative of its role. Routers have some of the same capabilities as switches, but routers are most often used to connect two or more networks. For example, a router could be used to connect a wireless network with a conventional local area network (LAN). Another common use is to connect a LAN with the Internet (a "wide-area network", or "WAN"). In this role, the router uses "Network Address Translation" (NAT) so that all of the computers attached to the LAN can share a single IP address. A network router handles the message in packets. A router uses the IP addresses in the packets to route them between multiple networks.

A personal computer can be configured to handle the function of a router if it is equipped with router software and two or more network interface cards (NIC). A separate NIC is needed for each network.

A router is capable of advanced functions, including serving as DHCP (domain host control protocol) server and Firewall. A Firewall protects computers from potential hazards from the other computers outside the network. Linking multiple networks often requires the conversion of protocols.

A router is an extremely diverse classification. Routers may provide connectivity inside offices, between different locations, and between businesses and the Internet. The largest routers connect Internet service providers, are used in very large business networks, or connect a business with a satellite link to a distant corporate locale. Advanced routers are powerful computers, complete with microprocessors. Very sophisticated routers are used by the Internet to manage the network traffic most efficiently.

A router maintains a table called "routing information base" (RIB) that tracks information about the available routes. The RIB can be static (manually determined by a network administrator) or dynamic (continually updated based on changing conditions). A RIB is simple on a small LAN, but can be extremely complex in the very large routers used on the Internet.

Summary

There are more types of network modules than the three discussed here, and there can be significant overlap in roles. For example, an "intelligent hub" can have many of the characteristics of a network switch. Wireless networks (WAN) have much in common with their conventional LAN cousins, but additional protocol is added for the special security and interference concerns specific to wireless networks. Multiple roles may be combined into a single assembly. Network routers sometimes have subassemblies that function as network switches.

The parts of the motherboard can be done on the computer to create Wiser

If you plan on your computer, you must understand the contents of the motherboard to build. This is the meaning of individual parts and know what makes the system faster or slower essential. And the good thing is that you learn to choose your parts carefully to your computer.

The following are the most important parts of the motherboard

1. CPU socket - is a part of the motherboard that holds the processor in the correct position. Sometimes called a ZIF (Zero InsertionForce), because it allows the processor to be inserted without resistance or are blocked in a simple and to the right place with the lever arm.

2. Chipset - It has two parts of the North Bridge and South Bridge chipset. The Northbridge handles the communication between the processor, RAM, ROM BIOS, PCI-E and AGP, also connects the South Bridge. The Southbridge handles the slower motherboard features such as SATA, IDE, USB, audio and LAN. In short, theNorth Bridge is a memory controller for quick learning and South Bridge is a controller I / O to the slowest skills. The AMD64 processor, the Northbridge is integrated into the processor.

3. Memory Card Slot - Check the form of computer memory. Sometimes it is called memory banks. There are two types of single channel and double it. With the only channel you can use any number of memories, while in dual channel you can only install the memory in pairs withsame size and speed.

4. Interface Connectors - joining the unit by the motherboard. IDE / ATA (formerly Technology Attachment), which combines the hard drive and optical drives, where you have 2 units on the same cable for the master and the other is the slave attached. newer motherboard with SATA (Serial Advance Technology Attachment) is much faster than the ATA but only supports one disk. And the old floppy connector is almost obsolete today. E 'only supports the floppy drive.

5. Expansion Slots - There are three types of expansion slots that are popular in use today. First, the AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) slot is used in graphics cards. It comes with 2x, 4x and 8x where 8x is the fastest. Second, the PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) slot, the O is the most common controller on almost all cards such as LAN, audio, modem and other I /. How to Choose the Right to create computer motherboard

Motherboards are often overlooked by most computer manufacturers. In fact, play an important role to build on your computer. It 'was the first thing you need to learn because it requires the ability of the system. This article will teach you to choose wisely the motherboard right to build on your computer.

Here are a few things when choosing the right motherboard is considered

1. The maximum speed of the processor. Decide what is the best speed that suits your needsand plan for the future, you are updating. The socket can handle it. Intel, different criteria for their newly released processor. This means that you have limitations, the system for a new version of the processor. Unlike AMD processors are the same as the base. A wise decision for this approach is a motherboard to choose the AMD processor.

2. The memory speed and type of memory capable of supporting it. DDR, DDR2 and DDR3 are completelydifferent and DDR3 is the fastest of all. Another thing is the size of memory can handle it. A newer version of the motherboard supports up to 16GB of memory and it was quite big enough. It is better to have a board of directors supports DDR3 and can handle the fastest speed of the motherboard to choose.

3. The expansion slot. What other cards can be combined in him? The majority of available motherboards on the market now with a PCI-E 16x and 1x PCI-E, the most common expansion slots is today. The best thing to do, the motherboard with an extra number of slots that are required select for your future expansion.

4. What other devices can connect to him? The number of SATA and ATA / IDE header. The number of USB port. It is only the number of ports you are going to use for their future needs?

5. What are the features built? Built-in functions are peripheral cards that are integrated into the motherboard. Some of these are audio, video, lanand modem. If the applications are purely office work, you can save money if you choose a motherboard with integrated graphics on it. But if the applications are the graphics I suggest you buy a separate graphics card.

6. The chipset used. Are connected to the motherboard chipset and is a major influence on system performance. cheap motherboard usually uses low-end chipsets, but this does not mean that the cards over money, the best chipset used outside. The best thing to do,You can find reviews for the motherboard you choose, to know his power.

7. The price. Although, if you are on a tight budget, the motherboard is not the last thing you need to sacrifice. A great motherboard is better than a pleasant event.

MTP fiber replacing copper cables in computer room applications?

There are several reasons why the fiber optic cables are replacing copper cables for most applications the computer room. The main reason for the request is greatly increased bandwidth for high definition videoconferencing systems and HDTV. This will require higher speeds to meet the information needs and has the fiber optic cable as a copper cable the bandwidth is much higher.

Another important reason for this trend is that the fiber optic cable connectors (especially LC) are smallerbased on copper cables and require less real estate back on the servers, switches and routers for the data system. This is why the producers of LC connectors to power some of its servers and switches.

fiber optic cables are in many cases, where power lines run near the data cables to prevent electromagnetic crosstalk, fiber optic cables are immune to be preferred. Where there is air conditioning and / or fans, which cannecessary for the computer system and are close to the wiring, the use of fiber optic cables to avoid interference of crosstalk signals data.

Distance considerations are also of great importance in creating an information system of space data. With fiber optic cable, we can, we can distance high-speed data to be exported to expand compared to copper cable. Where are the legacy copper must remain in operation, there are media converters that interfaceSystem of fiber optic connections with 12 fiber MTP mass, and several RJ-45 connectors on the front, as the interface for copper. Media converters are also the smallest available that convert one interface, one or two copper ports and duplex on the input signal on one or two fiber ports of the duplex 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet output systems. Using this equipment, the existing legacy system can also interface to remote systems over the firstpossible.

If you have hundreds of copper cables from the server switches effectively prevent the airflow under the floor computer can. If you are dealing with smaller, thinner fibers, not much to set a lock on the airflow. If you must pass through the walls between the computer room, the holes are necessary to stop much smaller and easier to fire. The weight of the cable through the track on top of the cabinet must also much less and much lessbulky.

The LCD module is a compact cassette, fiber density solution for saving space with a high cabinet and allow data to travel long distances. The cassette LC module is a module that has a distribution line or two on a twelve-fiber MTP page linked to twelve or 24 fiber optic connectors, such as LC, on the other side. E 'in a metal container that provides good protection fibers protected. The tape can be easily replaced during the maintenance cycle. The LC connector is half the size of the SC connector, which helps to reduce space requirements.

The boxes in rack or wall housing distribution fiber to stop for 3, 6, 9 or 12 cassettes. Each cartridge can handle 12 or 24 fibers. The fiber optic cables are high-density multi-fiber trunk cable MTP connectors that can be quickly moved or canceled with a fixed point A to point B with a tape or a cable assembly of transition, breaking the designers of data centers canthe connector 12 or 24 fiber MTP connectivity in each simplex or duplex. The fiber is terminated pre-test, pre-and essentially plug and play. The error occurs from areas of intervention on several floors and cleaning and cooking can not be imported. In order to expand, new server, a main cable with MTP connectivity are inserted and run very quickly. All wiring or boxes are not installed to the front with the necessary capitalCosts. The MTP fiber optic cable composed of 24, 36, 48, 72 or 144 fibers. The network can be used as servers and switches, have increased.

How to Choose the Right Motherboard to Build Your Computer

Motherboards are often neglected by most computer builder. In fact it plays a very important role to build your computer. It was the first thing you need to be learned because it dictates the overall capabilities of your system. This article will teach you how to choose wisely the right motherboard to build your computer.

Here are some things to be considered in choosing the right motherboard

1. The maximum processor speed. Decide what is the best speed that suits your needs and also for your future plan of upgrading it. The socket it can handle. Intel processors offers different socket for their newly released processor. It means that you have limitations on upgrading your system into a newer version of their processor. Unlike AMD processors they remain the same to their socket. A wise decision for this is to choose a motherboard that supports AMD processor.

2. The speed of memory and what kind of memory it can support. DDR, DDR2 and DDR3 are completely different and DDR3 is the fastest of them all. Another thing is the size of memory it can handle. Newer version of motherboards can support up to 16GB of memory and that was quite big enough. You better choose a board that supports DDR3 and the fastest speed the motherboard can handle.

3. The expansion slots. What other cards you can connect into it? Mostly available motherboards in the market are now having a PCI-E 16x and PCI-E 1x which is the most widely used expansion slot nowadays. The best thing to do is to choose motherboard with an extra number of slots that you will be needed for your future expansion.

4. What other peripherals you can connect into it? The number of SATA and ATA/IDE header. The number of USB port. Does it meet the number ports you're going to use including for your future needs?

5. What are the built-in features? Built-in features are peripheral cards that are integrated into your motherboard. Some of these are sound, video, LAN and modem. If your applications are purely office work you can save money if you choose a motherboard having a built-in video card on it. But, if your applications are more on graphics I suggest you buy a separate video cards.

6. The chipset being used. Chipsets are fixed into the motherboard and it greatly affects your system performance. Cheap motherboard mostly uses low end chipset but it doesn't mean that overpriced boards used the best chipset out there. The best thing to do is to find reviews for your chosen motherboard to know its performance.

7. The Price. Even though if you're in a tight budget the motherboard is not the last thing you have to sacrifice. A great motherboard is better than a good looking casing.
